The Five Seeds: Home Remedies

Have you tried out the Perfect Press® Five Seed Blend yet? We like to call it our one stop shop to health and happiness, because it combines the powers of five amazing pressed seed oils: sunflower, sesame, pumpkin, flax, and coriander.

Each of these oils is great to take but also great to apply externally for some amazing health benefits. We wanted to shine a spotlight on some easy home remedies for each oil. Read on for five of our favorites!

Pumpkin

Got lifeless, lackluster hair? Want to give it shine and volume? Want to do away with split ends forever? Then you want pumpkin seed oil. This seed oil is full of Vitamin K, omega–3 and –6 fatty acids, which creates the perfect environment for hair to grow long, strong, and vibrant.

You could always put this oil straight onto your hair, but we like to supplement it with another hair boosting oil: coconut oil.

Rejuvenating Hair Mask

Ingredients:

Heat equal parts of both oils over a low heat or in the microwave (most people will be able to cover their hair with about 2 tablespoons of each oil).

Dampen your hair (it should be wet, but not soaking).

Let the oil cool slightly, then apply it to the hair, working from the ends to the roots.

Massage it into the hair for five minutes to thoroughly work the oil in.

Leave in for at least 30 minutes, then wash out.

Flax

Flax is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which help to lock moisture into the skin, preventing dryness and damage. It nourishes the skin and improves its look and feel. Regular use can even delay the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

So we love to put flaxseed oil on our faces with this easy face mask.

Dry Skin Flax Mask

This face mask utilizes flax in all 3 forms. The oil is used for the obvious benefits that absorption will get you. It also calls for ground flax and whole seeds, to help to thoroughly clean and strengthen your skin.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tsp whole flax seeds
  • 1 tsp ground flax seeds
  • 3 tsp flax oil

Combine these 3 ingredients together in a small bowl and let it sit in the fridge for 15 minutes.
Massage it onto your face and neck with a circular motion.
Rest and let the mask do its work for 5-10 minutes.
Rinse with warm water.

Sunflower

Sunflower oil is rich in vitamin E, which makes it great for skin. It moisturizes, clears, and enhances to create a youthful glow. Got dry, irritated skin? Sunflower oil will see you through. It’s also a big help in regenerating skin cells. And as Organic Facts says, “This means your skin is better protected against damage from the sun, as well as the natural degradation of age that occurs when free radicals are present in the body. Antioxidants like vitamin E neutralize free radicals, keeping them from destroying or damaging healthy cells.”

So we love using it in homemade body oil blends like this one:

Sunflower Moisturizing Oil Blend

Ingredients:

  • 12 tsp sunflower oil
  • 10 drops of your favorite essential oil (consider rose, lavender, bergamot, jasmine, or orange)

Blend the oils together and apply to skin when it’s slightly damp. Rub in until most of the oil has been absorbed.

Sesame

Sesame seed oil is high in antioxidants, and has antibacterial properties. People who have used it on their skin have reported a decrease in joint pain and inflammation.

Got sore, aching feet at the end of the day? We suggest a sesame seed soak to get your tootsies ready to run.

Coriander

Coriander has fantastic antibacterial properties, so it’s great in any situation where bacteria is causing you stress: bad breath, athlete’s foot, digestive issues, and any cuts and scrapes.

One of our favorite recipes: our coriander mouthwash! You can find our full blog post on this recipe here, or read on for the recipe.

Easy DIY Mouthwash

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp Perfect Press® Coriander Oil
  • 32 drops tea tree essential oil
  • 16 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 1 cup distilled water
  • 3 tbsp baking soda (optional)

You will also need:

Measuring spoons (teaspoon & tablespoon)
A 1-pint mason jar
Instructions

Put the distilled water, essential oils and coriander oil into your jar. Screw on the lid and give it a good shake.
Add baking soda, if using it.
Put the lid back on and shake it again.
Use about a tablespoon and a half to rinse with after brushing. Swish for about a minute. Don’t forget to spit!
Keep the lid screwed tightly on the jar between uses. Shake before each use.
Note: It’s very important that you swish and spit because of the fact that there are essential oils in this recipe. Mouthwash should never be swallowed, even if it’s natural.
