My Top 5 “Secret Potions”

A lot of people who know my story and follow my work tell me they want to know what I take on a daily basis to stay healthy. “Do I take any secret potions?” is actually how the question is often phrased. I always chuckle when I get that question because there’s nothing secret about nutrition. What I take on a daily basis isn’t anything secret or magical, they’re just things that I’ve found help keep my body healthy and functioning at it’s best.

I broke down the top five things I always make sure to get into my system and posted them below. No secret potions, just some simple things that I incorporate into my routine every day.     

1) Water.

The first thing I do every morning is drink a minimum of one litre of water. My body has spent the whole night resting and healing, so naturally it has a lot of waste and bacteria to flush out. I also do this to rehydrate the parts of my system that have dried up overnight and need replenishing.

Sometimes I’ll even drink two litres of water.

I don’t guzzle it. I make it a part of my morning routine. I take 30 minutes and just sip a litre of water at a rate that is very comfortable for me. My kidneys process the water over the next few hours and my whole body functions better.

2) Oceans Alive.

I take a dropper-full of Oceans Alive first thing in the morning before eating anything. It doesn’t have to be consumed on an empty stomach but I find that for me it’s most effective when I take it first thing in the morning with water.

I’m not going to lie, Oceans Alive has a strong taste. If you want to mask that taste, you can add it to some fruit juice. I personally love the ocean flavor and that’s why I just add it to water. That’s just my favorite way to go about it.

3) Smoothie.

The next thing on my mind in the morning is getting a powerful hit of easily digestible nutrition, so I’ll usually put a smoothie together.

After throwing in various fruits and vegetables (I’ll go over my favorite combinations in front of a blender sometime soon) I’ll add some water. After that I start to add the interesting stuff…

  • Nutritional oils
  • Sunflower lecithin
  • Ribose
  • Green powder

Lecithin, or more specifically, non-GMO sunflower lecithin is another favorite to throw in. Again, beyond all of the health benefits, I find that it really helps to emulsify things a little bit.

Ribose is what I add next. That’s a powerful energy hit right there. Ribose is a monosaccharide — a type of naturally occurring sugar — that increases my energy production. Ribose has a nice sweetness to it, so it’s phenomenal in smoothies.

Finally I’ll add in a medley of very clean green powders. By green powders I mean powders that are made from concentrated vegetables. They have to be super clean. There is no particular brand that I think you’ve got to use. Just go out and find the one that you think is the nicest, the best flavor, that works for you. They’re just another way to get a powerful hit of nutrients in your system. I’ll add a spoonful of these powders to my smoothie and blend it all up. Over the next few hours I’ll drink that which gives me a very powerful flood of energy throughout my body.

4) Digestive Enzymes.  

Being 57 years old, I like to use digestive enzymes. There are a few very good ones that I’ve found work for me. I like ones with high protease levels to break down proteins. I also like betaine, a substance that allows hydrochloric acid to be replenished in your system, which you need to digest food.

When you’re young, you’ve got really healthy levels of digestive enzymes in your pancreas, gut and liver. As you get older it’s nice to begin adding more of these into your system to make sure you’re keeping those levels topped up. I don’t take digestive enzymes with every meal, but most of the time I’ll try to incorporate them. If I’m going to be eating a lot of protein I especially like to make sure I get a digestive enzyme supplement into my system.

5) Clean Eating.

After a smoothie, I just focus on eating clean for the rest of the day. I know that’s not very specific but that’s because it’s not meant to be. I like to be flexible with the rest of my day. I try to eat organic as much as possible, but when I’m traveling or I go over to a friend’s place it’s not always possible. I compensate for those times when I need to be flexible by creating a strong foundation of nutrition in the morning and controlling the rest of the food I eat as much as possible.

A big way I control the quality and the source of the food I eat at home is by getting it from local farms. My family and I actually have a farm of our own that my wife and one of my daughters take care of. We control the food we eat by getting it mostly from our farm or other farms in the area.

The point is, if you’re making sure that a very large percentage of your intake is super clean, super nutritious foundational foods, then you’re going to be able to weather the storms when they come. You’re going to be able to offset the damage that happens to your body when you’re in the situations that you can’t control. Situations where you don’t know what’s coming into your body. It’s all about just eating as clean as possible.

If there’s one thing that I want you to take away from all this it’s the importance of clean eating and proper nutrition. That’s the foundation of health, not “secret potions”.  Oceans Alive and the other products I mentioned are the nutritional building blocks I lay over that foundation.
