Phytoplankton Supplements Compared
“Marine phytoplankton are single-celled organisms, or “micro-algae,” that have lived on this planet much longer than humans—literally for billions of years.
We can think of them as the basis of all other life forms on the planet, as they’re responsible for making up to 90 percent of the Earth’s oxygen, while absorbing most of the carbon dioxide.”
-Kevin Gianni, Renegade Health
What exactly is phytoplankton?
It makes sense that the source of so much life-sustaining energy would be capable of nourishing our bodies so effectively.
If you’ve never heard of it, phytoplankton is a microalgae that has been around for billions of years. It is known to produce a large chunk of the Earth’s oxygen and serves as an important food supply for marine life and now, humans too.
According to Wellness Mama, phytoplankton “makes up about 25% of all vegetation on the planet, but is unique in how quickly it can reproduce itself, making it a highly sustainable food source.”
Phytoplankton is full of valuable nutrients that can benefit your heart, brain, lungs, eyes, skin and so much more. Marine phytoplankton is the key to filling the nutritional gaps in your diet and guiding your body back to optimal health.
You’re probably wondering about the specific benefits that marine phytoplankton can have for your body.
What it does for your body
For starters, phytoplankton is full of nutrients that promote a healthy body and mind. According to Livestrong.com, phytoplankton is jam-packed with omega-3 fatty acids, complete protein, B vitamins, trace minerals, amino acids, antioxidants and more.
Naturally, being full of so many things that are great for your body, phytoplankton is usually considered a superfood, but it goes way beyond your standard superfood.
Phytoplankton supports your liver to help your body naturally detoxify, encourages healthy cell regeneration, supports a strong immune system, boosts energy, encourages a healthy heart with anti-inflammatory properties, improves vision and clears skin… and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Now, you may be wondering…
What is the best phytoplankton supplement for me?
When making that decision, there are a few factors you should consider to make sure you’re getting the best phytoplankton available for your system. Choosing a good supplement simply means you’ll get more benefits out of it.
It’s important to know what to look out for.
Supplements compared
In the video above, personal trainer and health expert Tracy Sousa compares three brands of marine phytoplankton, including our Oceans Alive phytoplankton supplement.
Not all marine phytoplankton supplements are created equal. Some only contain a very small amount of phytoplankton and other companies process their phytoplankton — which removes a lot of nutrient value — so that they can package it in a convenient form.
In Tracy’s comparison, the first thing she points out is the difference in color. As Janet Helm of Nutrition Unplugged points out in her article on color and nutrition: “Color is one of the best cues of nutritional density — and the darker, the better.”
The darker and richer green the phytoplankton supplement, the more potent the product will be, and the more nutrient-dense. This means it will be easier to get all of the benefits out of the product.
Tracy points out that product B has no color, it’s practically clear. This means that the product is not very potent and probably doesn’t contain a lot of marine phytoplankton. You would probably have to take an awful lot of it to enjoy the health benefits phytoplankton has to offer.
When choosing a marine phytoplankton product, it’s important to make sure you’re not picking one that claims to be full of phytoplankton but only has trace amounts. Instead, you want one chock full of nutrients, in order to get the most out of it.
If we eliminate product B, we’re left with product A and Oceans Alive. Both of these products are rich in color, so they should both be fairly potent. So how do you decide which of these two products is going to offer you the most benefit?
Product A is in powdered form. This means it has gone through a dehydration process and the marine phytoplankton is no longer alive. This process not only kills the phytoplankton, but it also strips it of a lot of its nutrition, limiting benefits. In addition to being dried, product A only has one strain of phytoplankton in it.
Oceans Alive is raw. The phytoplankton is suspended in a sea mineral solution, which offers your body additional health benefits and keeps the plankton fresh.
Oceans Alive is made up of two carefully selected strains of marine phytoplankton, both of which have been studied extensively and have been specifically shown to be bioavailable for humans.
In 2008, Mike Adams of Natural News did a similar comparison with marine phytoplankton products and he too concluded that Oceans Alive was the superior product.
One of the major benefits he mentions in his written review is that “Oceans Alive Marine Phytoplankton is grown in a controlled, chemical-free environment, which makes the product highly consistent and free from environmental contaminants. It takes an enormous amount of space, ocean water and sunlight to make just a single ounce of marine phytoplankton, which is why the product seems so expensive at first, but when you consider the amount of nutrition you’re getting in each ounce, it’s actually quite a bargain.”
While products A and B are probably both good for you and have benefits to offer your body, Oceans Alive is the clear choice. In quality and potency, it surpasses the competition every time.
