This Oil is MRSA’s Worst Nightmare!

Although there have been disturbing news reports about outbreaks of MRSA (methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus) in hospitals around the world, scientists have found that a solution containing coriander oil can kill or at least slow down the bacteria’s growth.  Coriander (cilantro, when the leaves are used fresh) is a popular spice used widely in Asian, Latin American and Mediterranean cooking. It has a warm, sweet and spicy aroma.

The herb extract is lethal to a range of toxic bacteria, which cause infections that are resistant to drugs, a study has found.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection is caused by a strain of staph bacteria that’s become resistant to the antibiotics commonly used to treat ordinary staph infections, according to the Mayo Clinic. Most MRSA infections occur in people who’ve been in hospitals or other health care settings, such as nursing homes and dialysis centers. When it occurs in these settings, it’s known as health care-associated MRSA (HA-MRSA) infection. HA-MRSA infections are typically associated with invasive procedures or devices, such as surgeries, intravenous tubing or artificial joints.

According to the Journal of Medical Microbiology, scientists from the University of Beira Interior in Portugal, found that a solution containing less than 1.6% coriander oil was able to kill or at least slow down the growth of 12 bacterial strains, including MRSA, E.coli, salmonella and Bacillus cereus.  Many of these strains are the cause of food poisoning.

Coriander oil can cause membrane damage to the bacteria, leading to cell death, the scientists stated. Time magazine reported that researchers said the oil could be used to help fight drug-resistant bugs—and it also has the potential to fight food-borne illness by being added to food additives.

In some Asian and Mediterranean countries, coriander has long been revered for its medicinal properties, according to the researchers.

Dr Fernanda Domingues, who co-authored the Portuguese study, said coriander oil could help the millions who suffer from food-borne illnesses every year. “It could become a natural alternative to common antibiotics,” she said. “We envision the use of coriander in lotions, mouth rinses and even pills to fight multi-drug-resistant bacterial infections that otherwise could not be treated. This would significantly improve people’s quality of life.”

The Daily Mail in London reported that in the UK every year, about one million people suffer from food poisoning, leading to 20,000 needing hospital care and approximately 500 deaths, according to the Food Standards Agency. There were 1,900 cases of MRSA infection in the UK in 2009-2010 and nearly 500 deaths.
